The Obispo Maximo, or Supreme Bishop, of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente is elected by the General Assembly of the Church. He is the Chief Executive Officer of the Church. He also holds an important pastoral role being the Spiritual Head and Chief Pastor of the Church. He has precedence of honor and prominence of position among, and recognized to have primacy, over other bishops.
The Obispo Maximo represents and speaks in the name of the Church after due consultation with the Executive Commission on matters of national issues and with the Supreme Council of Bishops on issues concerning faith and morals.
The current Obispo Maximo is the Most Reverend Ephraim S. Fajutagana. He is the 12th in a line of succession that goes back from the first Obispo Maximo, the Most Reverend Gregorio Aglipay. He was elected at the 12th General Assembly of the Church held at Manila in May 2011.
